Marine Biology

High school sohomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible for the academy's Marine Biology Class and Field Study.  Classes begin in January of each year and continue through April culminating with a one-week field study in Key Largo, Florida.  Students can receive a 1/2 unit of credit through their local district's adopted course of study.  A local high school teacher, trained in the area of marine science, teaches the class.

The course focuses on the flora and fauna of the living coral reef.  Students gain basic knowledge and skills in taxonomy, ecology, field study techniques, research, observing, collecting and interpreting data.  Class participants are required to pass swimming and snorkeling standards.

The application process is held during the fall following an informative student/parent information meeting in October.  Students begin classes in January and take the field trip in the spring each year.
